My Favorite Aspect About Tannery Road in Sturbridge MA

My Favorite Aspect About Tannery Road in Sturbridge MA

The town of Sturbridge, MA, is a rather unique town in Massachusetts. It is full of history from the Colonial era, is convenient to numerous large cities with its highway access, has top-rate restaurants for every palate, and provides affordable options for real estate in an otherwise very pricey state.

Sturbridge is often thought of as being in "the country." An hour outside of Boston, the town of Sturbridge serves as the perfect landing spot for commuters who need to drive to various points in New England. Its rural charm, though, is the basis of its personality.

In Sturbridge, there are no sprawling housing developments. Rather, the town has a dozen or so neighborhoods of 20-30 homes on quiet streets off of scenic country roads. One neighborhood, the Tall Pines, consists of just one street:  Tannery Road

The homes of Tannery Road were built in the early 2000's, when new construction was booming. The developers of Tannery Road carved the street into the naturescape, following the slight elevation of the land and keeping many of the rock formations and trees native to the area.

The developers also added an unusual feature, which is my all-time favorite feature of Sturbridge neighborhoods:  The street lights.

Each lamp on the street is hand-made of glass and tin, and each is lit with a decorative bulb. (If a lamp requires repair, it is sent to the local tinsmith at Old Sturbridge Village.)  At night, the lamps provide a welcoming lit trail that echoes the curve of the sidewalk.  This is particularly spectacular in the winter, when the lights glow upon fresh snow and the glass casts geometric shadows to the ground.

A post-dinner stroll, a pre-sunrise jog, a walk with the dog - all are common activities beneath the warm, guiding lamps of Tannery Road.  It is always a pleasure to wander this serene neighborhood in quaint, historic Sturbridge.
