In the course of training for a triathlon, I was looking for a bike to take the place of my old mountain bike.  I'd been around to various bike shops in the area, and my budget just did not support a shiny, new road bike.  After searching such sites as eBay and craigslist for a used bike, I discovered Barney's Bicycle

Barney's Bicycle carries new and used bicycles for riders of all ages and abilities.  When I visited the shop, the owner, Peter Howard, made several recommendations for me.  I eventually selected a 2-year-old Giant, a lightweight hybrid, and I am absolutely thrilled with this bike.

In addition to trading bicycles, Barney's also hosts a variety of bike rides.  I like the Monday evening ride, which runs from Worcester, around Holden Reservoir, and back to Worcester.  It is a 13-14 mile ride with a moderate pace.  It combines a good workout with a friendly, social atmosphere.

The Barney's Bicycle web site contains a list of bike paths and suggested rides, and this is an invaluable resource for those who want to get out of traffic and explore New England by bike.  The folks at Barney's also collaborates  with the Seven Hills Wheelmen to run other rides in Central Massachusetts.

Barney's Bicycle is also one of the hosts of the George Street Bike Challenge held each summer in Worcester.  This bike event challenges cyclists to climb one of the steepest hills in town, a hill used by bicycle great Marshall W. "Major" Taylor in his late 1800's training regimen.

This bicycle shop is a fantastic resource for any cyclist in Central MA.  Thanks, Barney's, for putting me on the road!

Kathryn: What a nice find you have made. So now... besides being an expert at pedaling real estate... you can take the time to "pedal" your new bike as well. Hooray for you ! Sounds like fun.

Kathryn, you are very welcome. This is an example of how my wrinkled brain works. It just happens. I think that's good... but I'm not sure... LOL.  Have a great week !

Hi Kathryn - I bought my grandson his last two bikes at Barneys.  They are terrific.

That's great that they carry new and used. Sounds like they do a lot to participate with their customers in the community. Best of luck with the triathalon!

Conrad:  That's fantastic!  They do a great trade-in business.

Nina:  That's exactly what I like about them - their connection with the community.  Thank you for the well wishes.

Kathryn  Training for a triathalon is serious exercise - good luck.  This is an excellent local business post

Kathryn, it is always nice to have a bicycle shop close, and great Localism post.
