Sturbridge Celebrates Volunteer Trail Day April 16, 2011

Sturbridge, MA:  Spring clean-up is under way, and a large part of that involves the cleaning of local hiking trails.  On Saturday, April 16, 2011, the Sturbridge Trails Committee invites volunteers to participate in the construction of the Arbutus Park trail at 10 Old Sturbridge Village Road.

Trail clean-up runs from 9 am to noon and will be followed by a pizza party.  Volunteers will spend the day cleaning the trail surface and spreading fine gravel along the trail.  Other projects involve bridge maintenance and brush clearing.  Especially needed are small tractors for hauling gravel and brush.

Be sure to wear workboots and gloves, and bring a water bottle or two.  In the event of heavy rain, a rain date of April 23 is planned.

Pre-registration is required for those who wish to volunteer.  Contact Randy Redetzke at 508-344-9823 or email:  rredet@charter.net

Additional trail clean-up opportunities will be available in the towns of Brimfield and Southbridge.  Projects include work at Westville Recreation Area and the Brimfield Trail/Grand Trunk Trail.  Let's get out there and get our trails ready for hikers.

Hi Kathryn - It is wonderful that the public volunteers to clean up.  People care.

Conrad:  Last year they had some 60 people show up to help.  Hope they see even greater numbers this year.
