College Institutes One-Week Social Media Blackout

College Institutes One-Week Social Media Blackout

This story caught my eye:  The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology this week has put in place a social media blackout.  Students as well as staff are banned from using Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites.

What an experiment!  It appears that the students are taking this in stride, but the general public seems to be outraged at this infringement.

With social media such a constant presence in our online lives, how do you feel about this type of ban?  Is it a worthwhile experiment?  Will it heighten the students' and staff awareness of how much time they spend on social media?  Or is it truly a stepping-on of people's rights?  Post your comments below!

I heard this report on the radio * interesting that some students worked their way around the blockout and had no one to talk to.

As the mother of two college students, I am not sure that they know how to communicate any other way! They make plans on facebook and text each other constantly. Most phone calls are to me or limited to their very closest friends.  I think it is a very interesting social experiment.

What exactly are they trying to accomplish?  People talking face to face?  We can't have that!!  :)

Wallace:  Times sure have changed quickly, haven't they?

Holly:  I wonder if people went through this when the telephone was made available for households.

Christiansen Team:  Did you ever hear of such a thing!

Curious....did it work?  I would think it would just heighten it if anything....kind of like the prohibition!

Lori: I've not seen any follow-up report.  It will be interesting to see how the week went.
