Castle in the Clouds - Moultonborough, New Hampshire

Castle in the Clouds - Moultonborough, New Hampshire

castle in the clouds

On a recent trip to New Hampshire, our family took a tour to Castle in the Clouds.  This is the former home of millionnaire shoe manufacturer Thomas Plant.  He built the castle in the early 1900's.  Interestingly this property went into foreclosure after Plant faced financial losses from poor investments.  Castle in the Clouds is now managed by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust of New Hampshire.

The castle itself offers an elegantly designed dwelling with the upscale features of the day:  circular showers, hardwood floors, pipe organ, dumbwaiter, and furniture by the top designers.  But also impressive was the overall property.  The site offers miles of hiking trails, waterfalls, horseback riding, and a trout pond.

If you are visiting the Lake Winnipesaukee region of New Hampshire, make time to visit Castle in the Clouds.  You will need at least two hours, more if you plan to hike.

Today's rich and their McMansions don't have anything on the old rich and their mansions. In fact, in many ways, the old mansions are much more beautiful.

Looks beautiful!  I will have to check it out when we go out there.  New Hampshire is one of my favorite local states to visit.
