Bald Eagle Family on Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury MA
Every morning that I row on Lake Quinsigamond, I have the delightful pleasure of visiting an American bald eagle family that has taken up residence on one of the lake's islands. Their nest is high up in a pine tree, and I am able to pull my boat in front of the island to see if the birds are active. Most days, one of the adults is perched on a branch beside the nest, surveying the lake while the youngsters peek out from the nest.

I first saw the eagles in March of this year, but apparently they have been active since very early spring. The Telegram & Gazette recently published this article about the eagles and the Shrewsbury family who have been involved with the banding of the eagle family.
The Mass Audubon and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife have become involved in the tracking of the eagles, and the island on which the birds have taken up residence does indeed seem like a bird sanctuary. Birds of all sizes are seen going about their busy work, and a hum of chatter and song can often be heard. Lately, I have seen a crane standing guard on the shore and soaring over the water. Its blue-grey hue and elongated silouhette catches the eye.
The presence of the American bald eagle family at Lake Quinsigamond increases the satisfaction of a morning row. In addition to the joy of watching the sun rise over the trees and listening to the lake world awaken, the eagles' nest provides a destination to reach. I so look forward to watching the two babies take their first flights. What an honor it is to have this regal family of eagles in view on a daily basis.
